Baking Club Making Delicious Desserts For Fair Week

As BHS students, the Bloomsburg Fair is important. Having the week off from school is something we all look forward to. Between September 20th-28th, 2024 many days to go to the fair and enjoy the week without school. When at the fair you may walk around with friends and family, go on rides, or even eat lots of food. At the fair you may see The Baking Club located in the educational building with wonderful, delicious treats you should try in between rides or even after.

According to Mrs. Pyler, the teacher advisor to the baking club, they have a history of good performance in competition at the fair. “We do very well, we do very well. We get a lot of first place.” With the baking club doing very well over the years they have lots of experience. As fair week is approaching they will know what to expect and how to go about preparing so they can win first place again this year. “We are making a variety, culinary arts are all making no bakes. So we’ve got everything from rice-krispies treats to haystacks . . . Every kitchen is doing their own different thing. Food and nutrition are all doing healthier options, all doing gluten-free. Baking 2 is doing different quick breads so we have muffins, scones, we’re going to have some filled cookies that they're going to be doing. Culinary Act Club are all doing their own thing. We have bar cookies, sticky buns, cinnamon rolls, all kinds of things.” said Mrs Pyler. Having a variety of desserts gives everyone options that they would want to taste. Next, when Mrs Pyler asked if it is hard getting everyone to do their part when it comes to prepping for fair week? Why or why not? She then said “Sometimes, not the classes, club would probably be the one and that's just getting everyone to fit it into their schedule.” This would be a very important issue because with the club, getting everyone to fit time in their schedule to make the desserts they said they would for the fair would be difficult. Some people may have practice for sports, family situations and more personal things going on.

Then, Regan Flick joined the baking club because, “I love baking and I love Mrs. P. I’ve been in it since freshman year and we bake for the school, we cater some events for the school and we go on little field trips.” With her love for baking she decided that she would join the club and she is now a junior which shows how much she loves baking seeing that she has been in the club since she was a freshman. Another question I asked her was does she have any favorite desserts that she would be making for fair week. “I’m making sticky buns,” she said. When asked why this is her favorite that she would be making she then said “every Christmas my mom makes sticky buns and I’m using her recipe, so hopefully they get judged well.” With it being her moms recipe that she is using to make the sticky buns shows her love for them when her mom makes them. The baking club has been competing at the fair for years and every year there are new members who join the club like Lola Leiby. She said she joined the club because “I wanted to do something outside of school.” With joining the baking club it is definitely something outside of school and it requires time. She likes “baking because it is interesting and you can use your creativity to do so,” she said. As it pertains to making desserts for the fair Lola said “I bet I will like it because I like to do baking on my own so why not do it for school too.”
