Scientists have said for years that teenagers need about 8-10 hours of sleep every night to stay healthy, yet "about 7 out of 10 [teenagers do] not get enough sleep on school nights", according to the Center for Disease Control. This begs the question, how much sleep are BHS students getting? Red and White has asked 126 students to estimate how much sleep they got on one given night (Sunday, February 23rd), and the results were shocking. The average BHS student reports only getting 6.5 hours of sleep per night, 1 and a half hours less than the minimum recommended hours! In fact, only 13% of students surveyed said they achieved a healthy amount of sleep of between 8-10 hours. And 3% of students surveyed reported sleeping less than 1 hour or not at all the night before.
It is important, especially for young adults, to be getting a healthy amount of sleep. If not, the CDC warns, serious mental and physical problems can arise. Teenagers who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to be overweight, not get enough exercise, suffer from depression, use drugs and alcohol, and perform poorly in school.
Below are the results from the survey.
