How Are BHS Students Adjusting Going Into The Fall Season?

Have you ever wondered how students at BHS are truly feeling going into fall? As summer comes to an end and fall starts approaching, the inevitable time rolls around and students go back to school. The endless days of free time are no longer, and routine is back in place. This poses the question of, what are the emotions we are experiencing as this transition occurs and how do we adjust?

When asked about getting into a routine, BHS student Anastaja Hartmann stated, “... it’s a little hard getting back into the routine of school and waking up early…” When school starts it can be a jarring transition from summer. Other students mentioned how they try to change their sleep schedule to prepare for early mornings, and try to switch their mindsets to embrace and accept the change. They miss summer and looking back, wonder how it went by so fast. Hartmann also mentions “... I enjoy being on a schedule, it makes me feel more productive…” Although she struggles in the beginning, once she is in a consistent routine she appreciates a schedule she can follow and the feeling of being productive. Adjusting happens at different paces for each student, but usually we feel well accommodated within a week to a month of being in school. Preseason for sports helps ease some students into it as well, where they are attending school practices and have made the mental switch.

Siena Fritsky brings up a struggle that many might hide, she says, “I have a problem with comparing myself to others, so I’m working on that.” This along with anxiety is common when we are surrounded by our peers again after being on break. It can be a difficult adjustment to make when getting back into the routine. Stress is also increased in student athletes and those who have jobs outside of school. Along with their school work, they have to juggle going to work or practice. They have to figure out a good system for time management so they won’t fall behind in school, while also showing up and prioritizing their commitments. It can feel overwhelming, especially when classes are more strenuous.

After asking JHS student Isabelle Lovelace about what her goals are, she notes “... my goals are keeping my grades B or above to get into NHS. ” She is staying motivated and on top of her school work to get inducted into the National Honor Society. With everything going on in our lives, there has to be something that pushes us to keep going. A popular motivator is simply graduating and getting out of high school. We want to be able to move on to do bigger and better things. Friends are also a big help to ease the tension students may be feeling. Socializing and having time to be in good company can help to take our minds off of everyday stressors. Football games, homecoming, and fair week are some of the highlights in the fall that students anticipate. Being able to look forward to and attend school events is an important piece when it comes to staying driven.

Balance is extremely important to students when it comes to school and not burning themselves out. Fall is a time that involves lots of change. From the leaves turning colors, to school starting, it can be a hectic time for many students. Implementing good habits and staying on top of things is crucial to being successful while in high school. Students found effective ways to be productive and achieve balance by asking for help when needed, keeping up on assignments, holding themselves accountable, and maintaining a positive mindset. Diving into how this time affects others and the feelings they experience opens our views to the fact that everyone goes through similar emotions during seasons of change.
