One Semester Left

A bittersweet moment to what has felt like a very long journey. Seniors are approaching their last semester of high school. It’s something that everyone has looked forward to for the past four years and it’s closer than ever.  This article focuses on students and how they feel about their last moments of high school. Reflecting on what students have achieved and their plans for the future. I also took the time to talk to teachers who have taught and known students for multiple years.

I decided to spend some time talking with one of our lovely Spanish teachers, Doc. He reflected on the past year with the students he’s taught. He explained that he’s gotten to know new students and built more of a connection with ongoing students.  For those that know doc can understand how easy it is to talk with him and instantly build a connection. He is able to understand and empathize with every student that walks through his door. He said that when students first come and especially the students that have continued Spanish throughout the past four years it feels like the time goes by slowly. Although looking back it seems as though the time has flown by. Doc is looking forward to graduation in the next couple months. He explained that “it’s bittersweet, I’m excited that the students I’ve had are moving on with their lives but the fact that I won’t see them anymore is sad.”

Katie Studebaker (12) is ready for graduation so she can move onto bigger things. Her future plans include going to Bloomsburg University to major in speech language pathology. As she reflected on the past four years she explained Mrs. Murphy has left the biggest impression on her. She loves being in Murph’s classroom because she knows it’s a “safe space.” She also made sure to say how incredibly funny and kind Murphy is in and out of the classroom. Katie’s favorite high school memory is performing during halftime at football games as she is an active participant in color guard. We all know high school allows you to meet new friends and create beautiful friendships, although it’s extremely hard to leave the people you care about most when the time comes to graduate. She described how upset she is that she won’t be able to see her friends everyday. However, someone Katie can always count on is her mom. The best advice Katie has received  from her mom is to “keep moving forward even if you’re struggling.” This advice will carry into college.

Sydney Schraeder (12) is also planning to go to Bloomsburg University, although she remains undecided. I wasn’t surprised to hear that Doc has left the biggest impression on her. If you see her talking to anyone in the hall, it’s most likely him. She explained to me that “he’s one of the most caring people you’ll ever meet, and I’m so grateful to have the privilege of meeting him and taking his class.” Sydney’s favorite high school memories are attending football games. She did cheerleading for most of her high school career so it’s a bittersweet feeling for her to know that it's come to an end. A core memory she’ll never forget was the last football game of the season when we beat central and finally got our trophy back. When asked what she will miss most about high school, she said “not being able to see the people I grew up with everyday.” She explained that she is “happy, yet extremely sad to leave.” One of the most important people in Sydney's life is her mom. Similar to Katie, Sydney’s mom has given her some of the best advice she could ask for over the past couple years. The most important thing she tells Sydney is that “you’re stronger than you think”, like all of us we struggle but it’s important to know that you can do hard things.

High school is without a doubt some of the hardest yet most memorable years you’ll experience. You create friendships that will last a lifetime and make unforgettable memories. Although it’s bittersweet, it’s only the beginning. After high school everyone gets to start a new chapter of their lives. Just like Taylor Swift said, “the scary thing is you’re on your own now, but the cool thing is you’re on your own now!”
