The Capital Project aims to improve the lives of every student in the district through different means. The new and improved sports complex hopes to be a source of pride for our athletes by providing a better environment to practice and ultimately complete. The construction has been a long and bumpy road. But hopefully, now that the complex nears completion, the light at the end of our proverbial and seemingly perpetual tunnel will shine bright.
Joshua Confer-Fuller, a senior on the soccer team, is excited about the progress, “I’m liking it. What’s done I’m impressed with and I think when everything is done it will look even better.” Unfortunately, the soccer practice field was not complete for Confer-Fuller’s season, but even so, he says the impact wasn’t too great, “Really the only problem that happened was a time change to one of our games because the field was expected to be done and we would have played a game on it.” As it is Confer-Fuller’s senior year, the impacts of construction are felt even more. But even more powerful are the memories he has made throughout his high school experience. He says, “I’m most looking forward to looking back at how much it’s changed from our freshman year to senior, and remembering all the memories I’ve made here. To athletes, the effects from the complex are obvious. But it’s not just the athletes who may benefit from the completion of the project.
Connor Schneck, a senior member of the marching band, describes how he views the progress, “Well, considering I have little affiliation with the new sports fields, I see the progress to be adequate, I suppose. Although I’m pretty sure they were promised to be completed by a reasonable date, and the sounds of the machinery during class are distracting most times.” However, he does recognize the completed state of the football field, “Having the football field completed by a reasonable date was actually very convenient. Not only did we have a field to practice on, but the new kids were able to learn how to properly march on a football field, as it is much different than the fields we practiced on beforehand.” For the band, having the football field completed means a safe place for realistic and applicable practice.
Good progress is being made. And with good progress comes less machinery being used. Scheck comments on the state of the noise around campus, “It seems like the heavy machinery was used during the early to middle stages of the project, and as it reaches completion it should die down machinery-wise. Less machinery equals less distraction, which is always good,” he continues, “It also means less inconveniences like machinery taking up space or the looming threat of physical harm.”
The sports complex was a large portion of the Capital Project as it was proposed to the students. And now, as the construction is winding down, the fruits of the labors of all those involved will finally be available for the student body and the community to enjoy.
