Technology in Education:

Technology has become an important part of Bloomsburg High School’s education process, but is it too distracting? That answer can only be answered by teachers who utilize technology or choose to teach without it. There are many different teaching styles that are effective, but is technology beneficial? Mr. Sevison, a teacher at BHS who teaches mainly using surface pros, explains on why he thinks technology is effective, “Well, one of the biggest advantages to surface pros is the convenience when it comes to sharing information with the students. So giving out notes, homework, Surface Pro makes that much more efficient than the old style of, you know, pen and paper. We have to copy everything and then you pass everything out. So I mean, that's the number one reason right there for me.” The Surface Pros simply provide a large amount of convenience over using traditional paper. The educational process is much more streamlined if a teacher like Mr. Sevison can automatically give all the notes to students. This convenient way of handing out notes/work can be outweighed by the distraction of the internet.

Mr. O’Shea, a teacher at BHS who values open discussion over working on the surface pros, explains his stances on technology, “The technology that we have now, our capabilities are just amazing, especially in terms of education. Something simple as like what's the capital of Alabama. Before cell phones, you needed to look that up on an actual physical map now we have so much of this information at our fingertips. I think it's great, unfortunately, I think that oftentimes, it's just misused, and it can be a distraction certainly in the classroom. So, that's why I try to, when we get rolling with whatever the lesson is, I asked students to put those things away, and I feel like flipping it and saying they're liberated from technology, they're liberated from distractions. It’s just a different way of framing it.” Students may believe that technology is important, or maybe they think that it is more of a distraction. The answer to this debate can only be answered by preference. To read more into this topic, read a copy of the Red & White Print Edition.
